A note from Julie and James
Why we made
Figure Us Out.
We’re Julie and James, the founders of Figure Us Out. Our conversations about personality and the patterns in our own marriage helped shape the perspective behind it. We wanted a way to understand what happens when two people come together, including the strengths they create and the misunderstandings that keep getting in the way.
We’re married and have four kids. Personality has been part of the conversation in our family for years. James grew up talking about different personality styles and how people get along. After we got married, we kept exploring those ideas together. They gave us language for differences we could already feel but did not always know how to explain.
The broad categories were interesting, but people are more complicated than one label. Two people can look similar on the surface and still be driven by very different things. They can have the same strength for different reasons. They can love each other and still keep misreading the same response.
James started building a personality assessment and spent months working on the questions, cutting repetition and making them clearer. The aim was to explore those differences without asking people to spend hours answering questions. See how the assessment works.
We also used what we were learning to better understand our own relationship.
It helped explain things that had been difficult to put into words. James might bring up an idea because he is excited to explore it, while Julie starts asking practical questions because she is taking it seriously. Her questions can sound like rejection to him even when that is not what she means. Both people can have good intentions and still walk away feeling misunderstood.
That was when the idea for Figure Us Out began to take shape.
We wanted more couples to have that kind of understanding without spending years studying personality. That’s why we made Figure Us Out: a guide to who you each are and what happens when you’re together.
Each person gets an in-depth personality report. Then you receive a personalized couples guidebook about what you enjoy together, where good intentions get misunderstood, and clearer ways to talk about familiar differences. You can read the main points first, go deeper when you want to, and keep the PDFs.
In Opposites Attract. Then What?, we explain what it means to look at a relationship as a system and why some areas need sustained attention.
